English & Mathematics

English

The English curriculum at our school aims to ensure that students:

• learn to listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts across a growing range of contexts with accuracy, fluency and purpose

• appreciate, enjoy and use the English language in all its variations and develop a sense of its richness and power to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue

• understand how Standard Australian English works in its spoken and written forms and in combination with non-linguistic forms of communication to create meaning

• develop interest and skills in inquiring into the aesthetic aspects of texts, and develop an informed appreciation of literature.

Mathematics

The Mathematics curriculum at our school aims to ensure that students:

• develop useful mathematical and numeracy skills for everyday life, work and as active and critical citizens in a technological world

• see connections and apply mathematical concepts, skills and processes to pose and solve problems in mathematics and in other disciplines and contexts

• acquire specialist knowledge and skills in mathematics that provide for further study in the discipline

• appreciate mathematics as a discipline – its history, ideas, problems and applications, aesthetics and philosophy.

Specialist Subjects

Kyneton Primary School offers a curriculum in all areas of the Victorian Curriculum program. In addition there is specialist education in Physical Education, Art, Music and French.

The school has an excellent art program for Prep - Year 6 students presented by Mr Nathan Mountford. Prior to obtaining his teaching degree, Nathan worked as a graphic designer, and he often uses this experience to engage students and encourage creativity.
 
Students in Year Prep - Year 6 participate in the classroom Music Program led by Polly Christie. Polly has been the musical director of fourteen choirs and led workshops at festivals around Australia. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the school’s instrumental program which currently offers instruction with nine instruments. These are provided by private tutors at the school, during school time.  Instrumental band lessons are a wonderful opportunity to develop your child’s confidence, music-making skills, appreciation, and expression, as well as opportunities for diverse community involvement. Collaborative skills and friendships are developed through working closely with others.
 
Kyneton PS provides developmental physical education instruction for all levels as well as class sports sessions each week led by Mr Kirk Anstee. Kirk is a confident and highly effective teacher and a leading contributor to overall school improvement.
 
French language sessions for our Prep - Year 6 students occur for an hour each week. These are presented by Sherry Varga a qualified Canadian teacher of French. French is one of the world’s fastest-growing languages with many French-speaking countries experiencing rapid population growth. In addition, it is projected that by 2025, French will overtake German as the most spoken language in Europe.

Technology

At Kyneton Primary School we believe thinking improves when people interact with each other, when they break routine by experimenting, when they observe others at work, and when they assess and revise their own options. A cause beyond oneself becomes the norm and the school becomes successful.
